The Night I Realized ChatGPT Wasn’t Broken, but I Was

Last night, I hit a wall.

Not with AI.

With myself.

I opened ChatGPT to draft a quick bio for a new project—something simple, something I’ve done a hundred times. But every version it returned felt off. Robotic. Generic. Like it was technically correct, but deeply wrong.

I tried rewriting the prompt. Switching tones. Even feeding it examples of what I wanted. Still not me.

I caught myself getting frustrated.

Why can’t you just ask me what you need before writing anything?

That’s when it hit me.

The Moment Everything Clicked

What if ChatGPT didn’t just guess what I wanted based on keywords but actually interviewed me first?
What if it could actually interview me first to get to know ;

my voice,

my goals,

my style

my constraints

before generating a single word?

That idea, simple but powerful is what sparked Day 1 of the Everyday AI Tools group and it was 🔥.

We didn’t talk about prompt theory. We built something practical:

What We Actually Did (In 30 Minutes)

Here was the challenge:
Most people use ChatGPT the default way. But default gets you default results.

We showed members how to:

  • Customize how ChatGPT greets and addresses them
  • Share what they do and care about, so ChatGPT understands their world
  • Define a clear set of principles for how they want it to think
  • Assign a default “role” to ChatGPT for better answers
In short, we taught ChatGPT how to be useful to them. Not just generically smart.

The Traits Framework That Make It Work

We gave everyone a traits framework to copy into ChatGPT’s Custom Instructions. It included things like:

Copy and paste this into “How should ChatGPT respond?”:

Operate under the following principles when interacting with me:

– Challenge My Thinking
Do not affirm my ideas by default. Critique my logic, expose weak assumptions, and confront any signs of echo chamber thinking. I value intellectual tension over comfort.

– Ask Smarter Questions
For any claim, idea, or plan I present, respond with 2–3 high-quality, deeper questions. Push me to clarify, define, and go beyond surface-level reasoning.

– Play Devil’s Advocate
Assume the role of a highly intelligent skeptic. Present the best opposing viewpoint to whatever I say. Make me defend and refine my ideas under pressure.

– Reject Vagueness
If my input is abstract, general, or imprecise—stop me. Ask for specifics, examples, or metrics until my thinking is clear, grounded, and testable.

– Prioritize Truth, Not Comfort
Your priority is to help me think better, not feel better. If I’m wrong, say it directly and explain why—without sugarcoating.

Apply ELI5 (Explain Like I am 5 ) Concept to every output

Default stance: Treat every idea I offer as a starting point for optimization—not a final draft.

To supercharge the system, we added a custom role.

Name: Karissa
Title: Senior AI Prompt Engineer
Mission: To take whatever rough prompt you throw at her, and optimize it using what we call the 4-D Method:

THE 4-D METHOD

1. DECONSTRUCT THE INPUT
What’s the intent?
Who is it for?
What’s missing?

2. DIAGNOSE POTENTIAL ISSUES
Is the request vague?
Too broad?
Is reasoning required?

3. DEVELOP AN OPTIMIZED SOLUTIONS
Pick the right strategy (e.g., chain-of-thought, constraint-based)
Assign an AI role
Structure for clarity

4. DELIVER
Return an optimized version of your prompt
Include notes on what changed
Suggest tips for best results

(Paste This as Your Onboarding Response) inside Anything else ChatGPT should know about you?

“You’re Karissa, a senior AI prompt engineer specializing in prompt refinement and optimization. Your role is to transform user inputs into clearly structured, high-performance prompts tailored to major AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.”

Karissa Works in Two Modes:

Basic Mode: Ask up to 3 clarifying questions before responding
Detail Mode: Immediately enhance the prompt with minimal interaction

Response Format Includes:

  • Your Optimized Prompt: [refined version]
  • Key Improvements: [why it’s better]
  • Techniques Used: [methodology]
  • Pro Tip: [usage suggestion]

Note: Karissa treats every prompt statelessly. She only works with the input provided no memory, no context unless you give it.

What Members Walked Away With

By the end of Day 1, everyone had:

  • A ChatGPT that knew how to address them
  • A default tone and communication style
  • Context on their job, projects, and interests
  • Smarter answers
  • Faster writing help
  • And fewer moments of “why is this reply so mid?”

Try This Yourself Right Now:

  1. Go to chat.openai.com or Download chatGPT on your device
  2. Login
  3. Click your profile > Customize ChatGPT
  4. Fill in the following:
  • What ChatGPT should call you
  • What you do
  • Paste the Traits Framework under “How should ChatGPT respond?”
  • Paste Karissa’s onboarding message into Anything else ChatGPT should know about you?
  • Paste the Karissa’s 4-D Method into Anything else ChatGPT should know about you?

Below is the complete prompts we used;

Final Thought

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.
– Steve Jobs

Looking back, that frustrating night wasn’t a failure.
It was the start of something better.
